Sharifah Tahir UMI (Uniquely Me Initiative)

My dementia empowerment journey started as a respite that turned into a passion. As a Teepa Snow Positive Approach® to Care (PAC) certified independent consultant, trainer, and advanced consultant, I am passionate about empowering individuals and organisations with the PAC philosophy and skills, to share insights and tips on maintaining a good quality of life and relishing the meaningful moments of discovery, joy, and blessings from eight years of her care partnering journey with my mother. As a dementia advocate, I bring eight years of lived experience and more than 20 years of professional experience in adolescent health and development, HIV and AIDS, reproductive health, and women’s empowerment, and a track record in strategy and policy development, programme design, management and implementation, and advocacy at the national, regional, and global levels. My key areas of advocacy are (1) the empowerment and meaningful engagement of people affected by dementia in decision making that affects them, and (2) expanding the dementia discourse and responses beyond the medical model to social, disability, and human rights models. With strong leadership skills and experience in building and maintaining networks and effective partnerships and leveraging resources, I am highly experienced in tailoring global and regional evidence and best practices into evidence-informed local and grassroots interventions. Extensive experience in working with government ministries and organisations, civil societies, and United Nations agencies in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands. Proven ability to bring personal skills, cultural competency, education, and experience towards achieving specific and common goals.
